ABOUT THE EVENT
As part of ArtWeek SouthCoast, we're screening THE RED SHOES (1948). It's the ultimate ballet film, inspiring endless generations to take up dance.
Through aspiring dancer Vicky Page (Moira Shearer), the movie explores artistic ambition and its costs, particularly for women. Vicky joins a celebrated ballet troupe run by Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook). He sees her potential, but he didn't foresee her falling for his composer (Marius Goring). Vicky will be torn between what both men represent, artistic greatness for them both or love and artistic greatness for himself.
Dance and cinematography combine to make a gorgeous, fantastical film. The directors insisted on casting dancers who could act in the ballet roles. Jack Cardiff's cinematography captures the dancers movements in beautiful technicolor. Reginald Mills's editing turns a 17-minute ballet sequence into a cinematic wonder incapable of ever being recreated live on stage. All befitting of a film itself inspired by a fairytale.
Starring Anton Walbrook, Marius Goring, & Moira Shearer
